GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG women's tennis team cruised to a solid 6-1 conference victory against Mercer Thursday at the UNCG Tennis Courts.
The Spartans improve to 8-8 on the season with a 2-1 record against league opponents. Mercer falls to 4-17 and is 0-6 in SoCon play.
In doubles, UNCG came away with a 1-0 lead after claiming two of three doubles matches. Sophomore Masey DeMoss (Mayodan, N.C./McMichael) and junior Soumeya Anane (Coventry, Great Britain/Tile Hill Wood School) earned a 8-2 victory against Laure Kelly and Liza Klyachkin at No. 3 doubles.
At No. 1 doubles, Grace Korta and Roxy Bartz defeated senior Kayla Gammie (Port St. Lucie, Fla./Broward Virtual School) and freshman Corinne Blythe (Leicestershire, Great Britain/Queenswood School), 8-4.
In the deciding match, senior Stephanie Falcon (Marietta, Ga./Walton) and freshman Blaine Boaz (Dunwoody, Ga./Saint Pius X) outlasted Haley Powell and Xandra Fougner, 8-7 (7-2) in a tiebreaker to earn the doubles point.
In singles, Falcon gave UNCG a 2-0 lead after a 6-1, 6-2 win against Korta at No. 2 singles. Blythe made it 3-0 after defeating Powell, 6-2, 6-1 at No. 4 singles.
Junior Amy Ellis (Cheshire, Great Britain/Newcastle Under Lyme School) clinched the match with a 6-0, 6-4 victory against Bartz at No. 3 singles.
After a lightning delay, junior Jamie Grinberg (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill) finished out her match in straight sets against Klyachkin, 6-4, 6-4 at No. 5 singles.
The final two matches went the distance going into super tiebreakers. At No. 6 singles, Kelly picked up a point for Mercer with a win against Boaz, 2-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-7). Kelly won the super tiebreaker, 10-7. Gammie won a close match against Fougner, 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (13-11) at No. 1 singles.
UNCG remains home to face Samford Saturday, April 11 at noon at the UNCG Tennis Courts.
