GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG women's tennis team earned a 4-2 victory over the East Carolina Pirates on Thursday afternoon in Greensboro. After falling behind in the doubles portion of the event, the Spartans rattled off four of six victories in the singles portion to take the meet, 4-2.
“Today's win was a true team effort.” Head Coach Alejandra Guerra said, “I'm really proud of how the girls handled themselves on the court and how they worked through some tough times. This should help us build confidence for our next match.”
The Spartans fell behind early, falling in two of three doubles matches. Amy Ellis (Cheshire, Great Britain/Newcastle Under Lyme School) and Soumeya Anane (Coventry, Great Britain/Tile Hill Wood School) fell to Nicole LaDuca and Celia Ruiz, 6-4 in the No. 1 slot. Masey DeMoss (Mayodan, N.C./McMichael) and Jamie Grinberg (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill) dropped the No. 3 doubles match, 6-3. The pair of Blaine Boaz (Dunwoody, Ga./Saint Pius X) and Sarah Swiderski (Wesley Chapel, Fla./Saddlebrook Prep) did not finish.
In singles action, Anane, Swinderski, DeMoss, Corinne Blythe (Leicestershire, Great Britain/Queenswood School), and Grinberg each took home wins, and gave the Blue and Gold a victory. Anane, and DeMoss used two sets to win their matches. Swiderski, and Grinberg used three sets to earn their wins. Blythe's match went unfinished, but took the win leading 4-3 in the final set.
