India Timpton Scores a Career-High 18 Points but Spartans Fall to Furman on the Road

Greenville, S.C. – The UNCG women's basketball team (8-19, 0-12 SoCon) fell to Furman, 85-71, inside Timmons Arena Thursday night. Four Spartans scored in double figures but the second half push wasn't enough to overcome a 20-point first half deficit. Furman improves to 13-13 overall and 6-5 in the Southern Conference. The Spartans will play their final road game of the regular season Saturday, February 20, at Wofford on the SoCon Digital Network at 2 p.m.  

Furman dashed out to an early lead in the first quarter. The Paladins outscored UNCG 21-10 in the opening ten minutes and added another blackjack in the second frame for a 42-22 lead at halftime. The Paladins shot 63.6 percent from three-point range in the first half on 7-of-11 shots from downtown. Kelsey Ellis led all scorers with 14 points while India Timpton (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park) was the Spartans leading scorer with six points. The Paladins held a 19-17 advantage in rebounds but had 13 turnovers.

UNCG closed the gap to 15 in the third quarter outscoring Furman 27-22. The Spartans improved to shoot 58.6 percent in the second half and 42.9 percent from downtown. Despite a late push by UNCG, Furman was able to maintain its double-digit lead and hold on for a 14-point win to complete the regular season sweep of the Spartans.

Jade Scaife (Fort Washington, Md./Archbishop Spalding) led the way for UNCG with 13 points while Jazmine Missouri (Largo, Md./Academy of the Holy Cross) and Timpton each added 12 points. Lucy Mason (Stone Mountain, Ga./Chamblee Charter) added eight points shooting three-for-four from the field and sinking two free throws. Cierra Carter was the Paladins leading scorer in the final half with 10 points as the team shot 48.3 percent from the field.

Whitney Bunn led all scorers with 19 points while Timpton was UNCG's top scorer with a career-high 18 points and nine rebounds falling just one board shy of her fifth double-double of the season. Scaife added 17 points for the Spartans while Missouri had 14 points, one shy off her career-best as she made a career-high three treys.

Furman leads the all-time series 23-21amd is 12-8 at home against UNCG. The Paladins have one the last six meetings between the two SoCon foes.

UNCG returns to the court Saturday, February 20, when they face off with Wofford in Spartanburg, S.C., at 2 p.m.
