Softball Falls to NC State in Front of Season-High Crowd

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG softball team fell to NC State (21-26), 15-6, in six innings in front of a packed stadium with over 565 fans in attendance, a season high. Allison Geiner (Raleigh, N.C./Middle Creek) went three-for-three with two runs scored while Lindsay Thomas (Irvine, Calif./Northwood) smacked her team-leading 11th home run of the season, the 52nd of her career.

The Wolfpack plated four runs in the top of the first inning to take a commanding lead and chase Stephanie Bryden (Orlando, Fla./East River) out of the game after only recording one out. Alicia Bazonski (Sheffield, Mass./Mount Everett) came in to pitch and three innings allowing four earned runs on three hits. 

Danica Bishop (Irvine, Calif./Northwood) allowed a three-run home run to the first batter she faced but waved one and walked one in her outing before Bryden returned to close out the game.

L. Thomas got the Spartans on the board in in the bottom of the third cutting into the Wolfpack's 5-0 lead making it a 5-2 ball game with her two-run home run. NC State rallied however putting up eight runs on seven hits in the fourth inning to pull ahead 13-2.

UNCG placed four runs in the top of the fourth inning highlighted by an RBI hit from Rachael McClaskey (Pine Hill, N.J./Overbrook) and back-to-back sacrifice flies from Nicole Thomas (Irvine, Calif./Northwood) and Danielle Vega (Rialto, Calif./Aquinas).

After a three-up, three-down inning for both teams in the fifth, NC State scored two more runs in the top of the 15th to lead 15-6.

UNCG was unable to score in the bottom half of the inning, falling the Wolfpack in six innings, 15-6.

Tory Wright (Potomac, Va./Dominion) went two-for-three while L. Thomas went three-for-four with three RBI and two runs scored.

Bryden was hit with her 10th loss of the season as UNCG moves to 27-19 overall. The Spartans are now 3-13 all-time against NC State and 1-7 at home against the Wolfpack.

The Spartans return to action this weekend, April 23-24, at ETSU for a three-game Southern Conference series in Johnson City, Tenn.
