Box Score CULLOWHEE, N.C. – UNCG hit three home runs in a back-and-forth game before falling to the Western Carolina Catamounts at Hennon Stadium in Cullowhee, N.C. Saturday afternoon. The Spartans got home runs from L.J. Kalawaia (Wailuku, Hawai'i/Ohlone College) Cesar Trejo (Greensboro, N.C./Ragsdale) and Jake Kusz (Durham, N.C.), before falling 19-8 to the Catamounts. UNCG falls to 35-17 overall, and 13-7 in the Southern Conference. Western Carolina improves to 25-24, and 15-8 in the SoCon.
The three home runs in a game is the fifth time this season UNCG has gone yard at least three times. It is also the sixth consecutive game that the Spartans have had at least one home run. UNCG has now set single season records for hits and doubles in a season. With Saturday's 13-hit performance, the Spartans have 658 hits, breaking the previous record of 650 set in 1997 when the Spartans played 62 games. The Spartan offense also has 133 doubles on the year, besting the previous mark of 131 set in 2008.
The Spartans racked up 13 hits in the contest, with four players going for multi-hit performances. Collin Woody (Tampa, Fla./College of Central Florida) went 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored. Kalawaia finished with two hits, two runs scored and an RBI.
Trejo finished the contest 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Kusz added two hits, two RBI, and two runs. Ryne Sigmon (Danville, Va./Danville CC) finished 1-for-4 with an RBI. Ben Spitznagel (Cincinnati, Ohio/Wabash Valley CC) added a hit and an RBI. Dillon Stewart rounded out the offense, going 1-for-2 with an RBI.
UNCG used seven pitchers in the contest. Matt Frisbee (Candler, N.C./Enka) started and got through 2.2 innings, allowing seven hits and five earned runs with a strikeout. Andrew Wantz (Holly Springs, N.C./Holly Springs) (6-1) picked up the loss, going 1.1 innings, allowing one hit and a pair of earned runs to go with a strike out.
Drew Goodman (Charlotte, N.C./Hopewell) worked 0.1, allowing a hit. Ben Kerner (Cary, N.C./Brunswick CC) threw 0.2 innings, giving up three earned runs.
Jake Lewis (Wendell, N.C./Corinth Holders), Easton Welch (Randleman, N.C./Randleman) and Jake Mayhew (Winston-Salem, N.C./West Forsyth) worked 1.0 innings each, allowing a combined five hits.
UNCG grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Woody led of with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Stewart. Sigmon delivered a single on a chopper up the middle to bring in Woody and give UNCG its first lead of the series.
The lead was short lived however, as Western Carolina tied the game up at 1-1, scoring a run on doubles from Andrew Bullock and J.D. Long.
The Spartans came right back, regaining a 4-1 lead in the top of the third. Kusz led off with a double in the gap in right center field and scored on a single from Spitznagel. After a caught stealing, Kalawaia walked and Woody muscled a double off the handle to no man's land down the left field line. Stewart connected for a double off the wall in left to plate two and give UNCG the lead.
The Catamounts regained the lead the following half inning. Western Carolina hit a pair of home runs, including a three-run homer from Kramer Farrell put the Catamounts up 5-4.
UNCG regained the lead in the top of the fourth inning. After a Trejo single, Kusz hooked a home run around the foul pole down the right field line to take a 6-5 lead.
Western Carolina regained the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. After three two-out walks loaded the bases, Farrell singled to left to score two and go up 7-6.
WCU added a trio of insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth. J.D. Long hit a two-run home run, before Bryson Bowman added a solo home run.
The Catamounts continued to add to their lead in the bottom of the sixth inning. After a two-run home run from Farrell, Caleb Robinson dropped a single to right field with two on to score a pair and push the lead to 14-6.
Kalawaia cut into the lead in the top of the seventh, connecting for his sixth homer of the year to right field to half the lead at 14-7.
Western Carolina tacked on four more runs in the seventh inning, hitting a pair of two-run home runs.
UNCG cut into the lead in the eighth inning on a solo home run from Trejo.
The Catamounts again answered back, getting a solo home run from Bowman in the bottom of the eighth.
The Spartans and Catamounts return to action on Sunday, at 1:00 p.m. as the Spartans look to take the series finale at Hennon Stadium.
