CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Sophia Adams (Miami, Fla./TERRA Environmental Institute) earned victories at No. 4 singles and No. 3 doubles helping UNCG earn a 4-3 victory over the Western Carolina Catamounts Saturday afternoon. UNCG improves to 3-15 overall and 2-3 in the Southern Conference. Western Carolina falls to 11-8 and 0-4 in conference action.
UNCG fell behind after dropping two of the three doubles competition. Adams and partner Corinne Blythe (Leicestershire, Great Britain/Queenswood School) teamed up to defeat Elizabeth Ansari and Madison Riley, 7-5 at No. 3, preventing the doubles sweep.
The Spartans defeated Western Carolina in the top four positions in the singles competition in order to take the match. Alice Taylor (Cambridge, Great Britain/UMBC) notched UNCG's first victory of the afternoon, defeating Savannah Taranto, 6-3, 6-1. The Spartans fell behind 3-1 after dropping the matches at No. 5 and No. 6. UNCG scored victories in the final three positions to take the match. Nancy Bridges (Shelby, N.C./Shelby) defeated Alexa Webb in three sets, 3-6, 6-0, 6-4 at No. 3. Adams defeated Madison Riley, 7-6 (8-6), 7-5 at No. 4. Masey DeMoss (Mayodan, N.C./McMichael) scored the final victory of the match, helping UNCG earn its second SoCon victory. DeMoss defeated Jordan Strickland, 4-6, 7-6 (7-2), 7-5.
