Men's Tennis Notches First SoCon Win Over Samford, 6-1

GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG men's tennis registered its first Southern Conference win Monday afternoon at the Piedmont Indoor Tennis Center. The Spartans decisively took the match by earning the doubles point and taking five of the six singles. UNCG improves to 5-3 and 1-1 in SoCon play. Samford falls to 5-7 and 0-2 in the SoCon.

Marcus Vidgren (Stockholm, Sweden/Stockholm Idrotts Gymnasium) and Logan Walker (Stuart, Fla./Morningside Academy) were the first of many wins on the afternoon, defeating Aleksander Petrovic and Hugo Moreira, 6-2 at No. 3 doubles. Samford evened the score with a win at No. 1, but Jack Burkill (London, Great Britain/Millfield School) and Nico Grewe (Raleigh, N.C./Wakefield) defeated Russow Norval and Justin Ghavami, 7-6 (1) to take the doubles point.

Singles competition got started with Daniel Hammarstedt (Stockholm, Sweden/Ava Gymnasium) earning a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 4 over Norval for the second point. Vidgren also notched a straight-set victory, defeating Jake Faundez, 6-1, 7-5. After Petrovic took the match at No. 5, Connor Thompson (Atlanta, Ga./Holy Innocents), Burkill and Palmer all earned wins. Thompson defeated Ghavami, 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 at No. 1, Burkill notched a 6-1, 2-6, 6-3 win at No. 6 with Palmer earning a 6-4, 7-6 (5) win at No. 3.
