Spiders Slip Past Spartans in Men's Tennis Action

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Despite singles wins by UNC Greensboro's Nico Grewe, Ollie Palmer and Hugh Knapp, Richmond emerged with a 4-3 victory in men's tennis action on Sunday at the UNCG Tennis Courts.

Trailing 1-0, after a pair of wins in doubles action by the Spiders, Grewe tied the match for UNCG with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over No. 1 seed Brice Polender. Richmond regained the edge when sixth seed Campbell Erwin downed Ian Melnik by scores of 6-4, 6-3.

The Spiders stretched their lead to 3-1 with a 6-3, 6-2 victory by George Lovitt over Jack Burkill in the fifth-seeded match. Knapp won the first match of his collegiate career, defeating John Walsh by scores of 2-6, 7-5, 6-0 to pull the Spartans back within a point.

Palmer drew the match even at three when he overcame a first set loss to down Klein Evans 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 in a match between No. 2 seeds. With the victory on the line, Matt Fernandez posted a hard-fought three-set battle win over Roger Rogowski by scores of 6-7 (1-7), 6-3, 7-6 (7-2).

Grewe and Palmer were responsible for two wins in the match as they downed the doubles team of Fernandez and Josh Keitelman 6-3. However, the Spiders took advantage of wins by Lovitt / Walsh (6-4) and Evans / Joe Nardini (6-3) to grab the first point of the match.

The Spartans return to action on Friday, Feb. 8, when they welcome Radford for a 2 p.m. match at the UNCG Tennis Courts.
