Spartans Men's Tennis Dominates Presbyterian 6-1

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men's tennis team posted a dominating 6-1 victory over Presbyterian College on Sunday, March 17, closing its weekend swing through the South Carolina Upstate with a split following a setback to Furman on Saturday.

The Spartans, who improved to 4-8 on the season, opened doubles play with a 6-3 victory as the tandem of Nico Grewe / Ollie Palmer downed Oscar Alvarez and Daniel Stenger. Teammates Hugh Knapp / Jack Burkill grabbed the first point for UNCG following a 6-3 win against Jamie Castillo-Lopez / Max Benson in the clash of No. 2 doubles.

Burkill grabbed his second win of the day in singles, moving the UNCG lead to 2-0, by posting a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Jonathan Bedard. Roger Rogowski stretched the lead to three when he defeated Elias Svensson by scores of 6-3, 6-0.

Palmer, playing as UNCG's No. 1 player in singles, clinched the match for the Spartans with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Stenger. Grewe quickly followed with a 6-4, 6-4 victory against Benson as the No. 2 seeds clashed.

Ian Melnik recorded the final point for the Spartans on the afternoon with 4-6, 6-4, 10-5 victory against Castillo-Lopez. Alvarez prevented the complete sweep for UNCG as he earned a 7-6, 7-6 win over Knapp in the meeting of No. 4 seeds.

The Spartans now return to Greensboro for a three-match homestand that begins against East Carolina on Wednesday, March 20 at 2 p.m. From there UNCG will host Wofford (March 23) and USC Upstate (March 24).
