Spartans Clinch 10th Straight Win In Fleming

GREENSBORO, N.C. - The UNCG women's basketball team (14-4, 3-0) turned it up in the second half and secured the victory over Western Carolina (3-15, 0-3), 54-43, Saturday afternoon. Alexus Willey led the way for the Spartans with 12 points, including four three-pointers. Te'ja Twitty continued her strong post presence with 12 rebounds, along with nine points.

The Spartans offense got off to a slower than average start on Saturday, hitting just two of their first eight shot attempts, before a pair of threes from Willey put the Spartans within a field goal before the end of the quarter, at 12-10.

UNCG would come out and hit 3-of-4 three point attempts in the second quarter however, knocking down a total of five in the first half alone. Willey's three field goals from beyond the arc gave the guard a game-high nine before the break, as the Spartans took a 26-23 advantage into the second half.

The home team's scoring continued to pick up in the third quarter with the Spartans opening the third quarter on a 13-6 run, led by six points from senior forward Te'ja Twitty. The Catamounts scored a pair of early buckets in the period before experiencing a scoreless drought that lasted almost six minutes, as the Spartans outscored their opponents 15-8 to take a 51-41 lead.

The Catamounts would cut UNCG's lead to as little as eight during the fourth, but the Spartans answered back with a 9-2 run of their own, ultimately holding off their opponents for a 54-43 victory. The home squad's victory extends their current streak to eight overall, while the Spartans have come out on top in their last 10 contests in Fleming Gymnasium.
