Barquero Stays Perfect In Spartans' Loss To Charlotte

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Erika Barquero retains her unbeaten streak in 2020, despite the Spartans dropping a 5-2 decision against Charlotte on Saturday.

Barquero and Hanna Giddings combined for a third straight doubles win to kickoff the spring season, defeating the 49ers' top pairing by a final of 6-1. Charlotte would take the doubles point however after recording back-to-back 6-3 victories in the No. 2 and No. 3 pairings.

Barquero was forced to three sets after taking her first against the 49ers' top-seeded Rocio Safont 6-3, defeating her opponent 10-6 in the third for her third straight individual victory. Barquero represents one of just two losses for Safont this spring season, with the other coming to the No. 31 player in the country, Alana Smith, of No. 8 NC State.

Charlotte would take four of the five remaining singles' matches, with senior Sophia Adams representing the Spartans' lone other individual win. The Miami native defeated the 49ers' No. 2 in three sets, winning the first and third by counts of 7-6 and 10-8.

The Spartans now own a 1-2 record on the year, opening the season on a 5-2 win over UNCW before dropping decisions to UNC Asheville and Charlotte.
