Women's Hoops Set for Clash with Western Carolina

GREENSBORO, N.C. - UNCG women's basketball (17-7, 6-3) continue their impressive 2019-20 campaign with a matchup at Western Carolina (5-19, 2-7), Saturday at 2 p.m. The Spartans are currently among the top teams in the Southern Conference, and with a win, would jump into a first-place tie with the Wofford Terriers.

LAST TIME OUT
The Spartans last took the floor, back on Saturday, February 8th at the ETSU Buccaneers. 29 points from Nadine Soliman and a program-best 25th career double-double from Te'ja Twitty led UNCG to a convincing 65-45 victory. With the road win, the G snapped their first multiple-game losing streak of the season (2), and continued to display why their scoring defense is among the best in the country. Bucs' E'Lease Stafford was the only ETSU player to score in double-digits (18pts, nine rebounds), as ETSU coughed up 20 turnovers, turning into 15 Spartans points.

-- Soliman leads all SoCon players with 16.9 points per game (84th in Division I); The senior guard is 35 points away from hitting the 2,000 career mark (1,965)
-- The Spartans scoring defense has been their calling card in 2019-20, currently ranked No. 13 in the nation (54.8 ppg)
-- Te'ja Twitty has dazzled in conference action this season, averaging 11.3 points and 9.2 rebounds per game

SCOUTING THE CATAMOUNTS
-- Western Carolina can make it rain from long range, currently ranked second in the SoCon with 167 three-pointers made this season (7.0 per game)
-- The Catamounts are led by Jewell Smalls, who's averaging 12.7 points and 10 rebounds through 24 games; junior Lauren LaPlant follows with 11.3 ppg, sitting third in the conference with 64 three pointers made (2.7 per game)
-- Western is coming off a road win at Chattanooga on Saturday, February 8th. The victory marked their first win over the Mocs in 21 meetings; four players scored double-digits for the Catamounts in the win
- LaPlant has scored double-digit points in nine of her last 10 games; the guard has also knocked down atleast one three-pointer in all 24 games this season

SERIES HISTORY
-- UNCG has won the last five meetings with the Catamounts. four of those wins came at home, with their last trip to Cullowhee, N.C. resulting in a 88-67 victory during the 2017-18 season. The Spartans took care of business last season against the Catamounts, running away with a 66-42 victory at home. 
- Earlier this season, UNCG handled Western Carolina in Greensboro, 54-43. Alexus Willey (12pts) and Te'ja Twitty (12rebs, 9pts) led the the Spartans to their 10th straight win at Fleming Gymnasium. 
-- Western Carolina leads the all-time series, 38-31. The Spartans' longest winning streak of the series is eight games, spanning from 1983-84 to 1998-1999. Western won 11-straight matchups between 2011-12 to 2015-16.
