Women's Basketball Clinches Regular Season SoCon Title

MACON, Ga.  – UNCG women's basketball clinches a share of the SoCon Regular Season title on Saturday, with a 60-50 victory at Mercer. Nadine Soliman poured in 24 while pulling down eight rebounds, hitting 4-of-5 from beyond the arc on the afternoon. 

The Bears took a commanding lead in the early goings, jumping out to an 11-2 advamtage, before taking a 13-6 lead in into the first quarter break. The Spartans would hit 10-of-16 for 26 points in the second quarter however while holding Mercer to 15. Soliman hit 5-of-5 with a pair of threes to score 12 points in the second period alone, as the Spartans took a 32-28 lead into the halftime break.

The two sides traded leads during the third quarter, with the Bears going on an 11-5 run to open the second half, before seeing the Spartans score seven of the last 10 points of the period.

With Soliman scoring a pair of free throws in the final 10 seconds of the third quarter, the senior would add another 10 in the final period to bring her total to 24 overall and cement a 10-point win for the visitors. The UNCG defense held the Bears to just eight points in the final 10 minutes while keeping Mercer to just 25-percent shooting in the second half.

The Spartans' SoCon title is their first since 2002, as they tie Samford and Chattanooga for the top spot in the conference standings. UNCG will enter this year's Southern Conference Championship tournament as the No. 3 seed, playing No. 6 ETSU this coming Thursday at 5:45 p.m.

-- Aja Boyd, Te'ja Twitty, Tori Powell and Pernilla Sorensen each scored eight points on the afternoon, with Twitty pulling down seven boards

-- This is the 11th time the Spartans have held an opponent to 50 points or less, holding SoCon teams to 53.86 points on the year

-- The Spartans came into the 2019-20 season 0-12 against the Bears all-time, with UNCG grabbing their first two wins against Mercer during the current campaign
