GREENSBORO, N.C. - After securing back-to-back 7-2 and 9-3 wins over Elon in Saturday's doubleheader, UNCG softball drops Sunday's finale by a final score of 8-3 in Greensboro.
The Spartans started the scoring, with a pair of runs in the first. Following up
Delaney Cumbie's leadoff walk,
Makenna Matthijs tallied her first triple of the year to drive in UNCG's first run of the afternoon.
Jasmine Palmer recorded a two-out single later in the frame to score her teammate and give the Spartans' a 2-0 lead heading into the second inning.
UNCG saw that lead disappear during the top half of the third however, with the Phoenix scoring three runs off of three hits. The home team would add the tying run in the bottom half of the inning, thanks to a
Samantha Lagrama RBI single, but Elon responded with a go ahead run in the fifth, before hanging four in the visiting half of the seventh.
The Spartans were unable to cross home plate in the final frame, with the score reading 8-3 in favor of the visiting Phoenix. Matthijs finished the night 2-for-4 with an RBI, as the Spartans were held to five hits, with starting righty
Morgan Scott striking out 10 in her complete game performance in the circle.
