GREENSBORO, N.C. -Â What was expected to be a tight battle didn't disappoint, as a fourth quarter run from UNCG women's basketball (4-11, 2-4) clinched a 55-51 come-from-behind victory over visiting Wofford (8-5, 4-2). UNCG closed the contest on a 19-5 run, completing a comeback from a 10-point deficit held as late as 6:07 in the fourth quarter, with guards
CeCe Crudup and
Pernilla Sorensen combining for 22 points.
The Spartans were outrebounded 14-6 in the opening period but the side's superior shooting from beyond the arc kept the first 10 minutes close. Senior
Pernilla Sorensen knocked down a pair of threes in the period, including an off-balance tre to put her team ahead 12-10 with 1:14 remaining in the opening frame.Â
The combo guard continued her hot hand into the second quarter hitting her third three-pointer of the contest before the halftime whistle. She was aided by sophomore
Amber Redmond who completed the three-point play at the 6:49 mark after scoring through contact. Redmond scored four in the second quarter as the home team held the Terriers to just nine in the period.
In addition to their work from beyond the arc, the Spartan defense held Wofford 1-for-7 from three-point range, while their clean defense led to just a single foul committed in the opening 20 minutes and a 25-21 lead.
The second half was defined by runs from both sides as the pair continued to trade blows in the third quarter. The Terriers took their first lead since the first period two minutes into the fourth in the midst of a 17-2 run. That Wofford run was boosted by a UNCG technical foul and nine made free throws from the visitors, giving the Spartans a 46-36 deficit to face with just over six minutes remaining.
Those final moments would belong solely to the home team however, with the Spartans scoring the next 17 points of the contest and closing those last six minutes on a 19-5 run. Sorensen hit her fourth three of the contest to bring her team level with the Terriers at 46, while another three from senior
Tori Powell gave the Spartans a lead that they wouldn't relinquish for the rest of the night.Â
Powell scored six of her eight points on the night during that run, as the Spartans went 6-for-8 from the charity stripe in the final 30 seconds to sink the Terriers by a final of 55-51.Â
