GREENSBORO, N.C. – Jasmine Palmer and
Jordan Gontram supplied the offensive punch to lead the UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team to a 10-2 victory over North Carolina A&T in a non-conference contest Friday afternoon.
Freshman
Alina Varga added another pitching gem to her fledging career with a complete-game performance. It was Varga's second complete-game in as many starts this season.
The Spartans were able to finish one game of the doubleheader. The second game was not completed as it started raining. UNCG was ahead in that contest too when the game was called. Unfortunately, it wasn't an official game.
Palmer, Gontram and
Brooklynn Maxwell accounted for nine of UNCG's 10 runs batted in. They all had two hits each. Gontram had a double and a grand slam to lead the Spartan offensive onslaught.
It was Gontram's third homer of the season and the 28th of her outstanding career.
Makenna Matthijs and Palmer scored two runs each. Palmer's first inning three-run homer set the tone for the Spartans. Gontram's blast in the fifth inning finished the scoring and provided all the support that Varga needed.
In helping UNCG win its second straight victory, Varga struck out three batters and allowed an earned run while tossing 60 pitches in five efficient innings.
UNCG plays North Carolina A&T in a pair of games on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.
