Spartans Rally To Earn Split At Radford

RADFORD, Va. -- Samantha Lagrama hit a three-run home run and right-hander Hannah Stiltner pitched a complete game, lifting UNCG to a 4-3 victory in the second game of a doubleheader at Radford Softball Stadium on Wednesday.

The Highlanders won the opener 10-9 as both games came down to the bottom of the seventh inning.

In the nightcap, Stiltner (2-2, 6.70 ERA), a senior from Mebane, gave up two earned runs and struck out five in seven innings to help UNCG (14-7 overall) split the non-conference doubleheader at Radford (9-14).

Junior left fielder Hannah Kincer hit a solo home run in the third inning to give the Spartans a 1-0 lead in the nightcap.

UNCG trailed 3-1 heading into the sixth when sophomore third baseman Maycin Brown hit a one-out single and redshirt senior second baseman Jasmine Palmer followed with a double. With two outs, junior catcher Lagrama hit the first pitch she saw over the right-center field fence to give the Spartans the lead.

Stiltner pitched out of a jam in the seventh to seal it. Radford's Talia Douglas led off with a single, took second on an error and stole third. But Stiltner coaxed a foul pop-up and two groundouts to end it.

UNCG lost the opener 10-9 when Radford's Madison Canady hit an RBI single with one out in the bottom of the seventh to win it.

Radford built a 5-0 lead, but the Spartans scored four runs in the fifth and five in the sixth to take a 9-6 lead.

Brown, the SoCon Player of the Week, went 2-for-3 with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored for the Spartans, and freshman shortstop Brooklynn Maxwell was 2-for-4 with a double and four RBIs. Palmer hit a solo home run, and junior Delaney Cumbie was 2-for-4 with a double.

Canady was 3-for-4 with three RBIs to lead Radford, a team built on speed that stole 12 bases in the doubleheader.

UNCG, which has homered in eight consecutive games, will play its first Southern Conference games in a weekend series against East Tennessee State. The Spartans will host a doubleheader Friday starting at 1 p.m. and a single game Saturday at noon at the UNCG Softball Stadium.
