UNCG Turns On The Power To Finish Sweep Of UNCW

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team unleashed another power display to defeat UNCW, 9-3, in a non-conference contest Saturday afternoon.

The Spartans hit four home runs to extend their winning streak to seven games. Even more amazing is UNCG led off the bottom of the first three innings with solo homers. During the three-game sweep of the Seahawks, UNCG hit seven home runs and enjoyed a .740 slugging percentage.

During its winning streak, UNCG has scored 69 runs. These three games were the start of 11 consecutive contests against Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) competition.

The beneficiary of all the Spartan long ball prowess was starting pitcher Morgan Scott, who struck out eight batters in four innings of work to win her second straight start. Alex Rodriguez tossed the final three innings.

Trailing 1-0, UNCG wasted little time in tying the game.

Delaney Cumbie hit the second pitch she saw over the centerfield fence. An inning later, Samantha Lagrama gave UNCG a 2-1 lead with her first homer of the season. To complete the trifecta, Blayke Batten led off the third inning with a homer that gave UNCG a 5-1 lead.

UNCG scored three runs in the second and third inning to open a comfortable advantage.

Makenna Matthijs and Jordan Gontram had one-out singles in the second inning. Matthijs added her second RBI in the third inning. Kayleigh Willis' single made it 7-1 after three innings.

After the Seahawks had the audacity to score two runs in the sixth inning to close to within, 7-3, Maycin Brown hit a two-run homer that sailed over the scoreboard to complete the scoring for the Spartans.

In its last two Saturday home games against North Carolina A&T and UNCW, UNCG has hit nine home runs.

UNCG visits Elon on Wednesday, March 10 in a game scheduled to start at 4:30 p.m.
