GREENSBORO -- Makenna Matthijs doubled and hit a two-run home run, leading UNCG in an 11-4 non-conference loss to red-hot Charlotte at UNCG Softball Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.
Matthijs, a senior center fielder, went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs for the Spartans (18-14 overall). Matthijs raised her batting average to .327, and she leads the SoCon with both 29 runs scored and 28 RBIs.
Charlotte center fielder Spenser Gray drove in four runs with a bases-loaded triple and an RBI groundout. Winning pitcher Madelyn Wright (9-2) struck out five in 4 2/3 innings and also went 2-for-4 with two RBIs for the 49ers (22-9), who have won eight of their last 10 games.
Morgan Scott (9-7) took the loss, but struck out two in three innings to add to boost her SoCon-leading strikeout total to 126. The Spartans used all four of their pitchers in the non-conference tuneup for a key weekend series at Chattanooga.
UNCG plays a doubleheader against the Mocs at 1 p.m. Saturday, and a single game at 2 p.m. Sunday. The Spartans will play 12 of their final 14 games of the regular season against SoCon opponents.

Hannah Kincer went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI for the Spartans, while senior
Kayleigh Willis (.351, 22 RBIs) and sophomore
Maycin Brown (.357, 18 RBIs) both went 1-for-3.
