CHATTTANOOGA, Tenn. --
Makenna Matthijs went 4-for-5 with two doubles and three RBIs, and
Hannah Stiltner pitched 3 2/3 scoreless innings of relief, leading UNCG to a 10-5 comeback victory over Chattanooga at Frost Stadium on Sunday as the Spartans finished a three-game series sweep.
Matthijs, a senior center fielder, singled with the bases loaded and one out in the fifth inning, driving in two runs to break a 5-5 tie and give UNCG (21-14, 6-3 SoCon) the lead for good. It was her third career four-hit game.
The Spartans will return from the weekend road trip to Chattanooga (9-21, 5-6 SoCon) in second place in the Southern Conference standings. UNCG has 11 games remaining, nine of them against SoCon opponents including a three-game series against league-leader Western Carolina to conclude the regular season.
Stiltner (3-5), a senior right-hander, came on in relief of starter
Morgan Scott with one out in the bottom of the fourth inning and UNCG trailing 5-4. Stiltner worked out of the jam, stranding three baserunners. She retired 11 of the 14 batters she faced to nail down the win.
Senior second baseman
Jasmine Palmer went 2-for-4 with a double, a walk and two runs scored for UNCG. She drew her walk leading off the fifth to start a five-run rally.
Melanie Darges' RBI single in the fifth tied the game, and after Matthijs' two-run single,
Delaney Cumbie hit a two-run double to finish the rally.
Samantha Lagrama hit a two-run home run for UNCG in the third inning. It was UNCG's 60th of the season.
For Chattanooga, Courtney Ball went 2-for-4 with a two-run double.
UNCG plays again Wednesday, hosting East Carolina in a non-conference game at 5 p.m.
