WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's tennis team opened up play today in Winston-Salem at the fall ITA Carolina Regional. It was a tough morning for the ladies, as they dropped singles matches. 
 
The trio of Hanna Giddings, Raegan Mitchell and Olivia Gallagher played in the opening qualifying round for the main draw. All three lost their first matches. Mitchell fell 7-6(4), 6-0, Giddings dropped her match 6-4, 2-6, 6-3, and Gallagher dropped her match 6-0, 6-2. 
 
The three Spartans continued having tough luck, all three losing their second round matches as well. Giddings fell 6-2, 7-6(4), Gallagher dropped her match 6-3, 0-6, 6-1 and Mitchell dropped a close match 7-5, 4-6, 6-4.
 
"It honestly was not a great day for us," stated Head Coach Paul Thomson. "I was hoping for not so much better results, but better play. We still don't trust ourselves. We play too big at times and too passive at others. It is more about what we are not comfortable doing yet."
 
The afternoon continued to be a struggle with doubles. Alexandra Dodashev Enbert and McCollough Perry showed flashes of solid play, but lacked the consistency to close the deal falling 8-5. 
 
The lone win for the day came from the duo of Juliana Craft and Luna Urso, who won their match 8-6. "We played a really gritty match," said Craft. "We played hard until the end and we held it together when things got tight."
 
The teams of Giddings and Gallagher and Mitchell, Dodashev both advanced with walkovers into the second round.
 
The ladies will be back in action Friday morning in Winston-Salem at 9:00 a.m. Doubles play will start the day followed by the B flight singles.
