Women’s Basketball to Battle Gardner-Webb in First Road Test

GREENSBORO, N.C. - The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's basketball team will continue the season with its first road test against in-state rival Gardner-Webb on Saturday, November 12 with a 2:00 p.m. tip-off at Paul Porter Arena.

SEASON LOOK AHEAD
  • UNCG will have two Power-5 opponents this season, both against members of the Southeastern Conference (SEC).
  • The Spartans will play the Kentucky Wildcats on December 4th for a Sunday matinee at 2 p.m. in Lexington.
  • Later in the month, they will head down south to Florida for another matinee against the Florida Gators with a start time at 2 p.m. on December 18th.
  • Four of seven games in November will be inside of Fleming Gym.
  • The Spartans will open SoCon play with a trip to the reining conference champions, Mercer Bears on January 5 at 7 p.m.
  • The SoCon Tournament will be held at the Harrah's Cherokee Center in Asheville, N.C. from March 2-5. 
LAST TIME OUT
  • UNCG defeated Guilford College in a crosstown matchup on Monday, 100-74, at Fleming Gym.
  • Five Spartans reached double figures including graduate student Akira Wiggins, sophomore Kennedy Simpson, freshman Antoniette Emma-Nnopu, sophomore Nasia Powell, and senior Faith Price. Two of the five came off the bench contributing to the Spartans' success.
  • UNCG reached the century mark in points for the first time since 2019-20, when the Spartans defeated Erskine College 106-44 at home in Fleming Gym on November 26, 2019.
  • Powell tallied a career-high 12 points and seven rebounds.
SCOUTING THE SPARTANS
  • The Spartans welcome back 12 players from last season's team, including the sophomore duo of Isys Grady and Nia Howard. Grady led the team in total points with 267, while Howard returns as the team's leading three-point shooter.
  • Grady was the only Spartan to earn a spot on the Southern Conference's (SoCon) All-Conference Preseason Team.
  • Also returning for the Blue and Gold is leading rebounder Khalis Cain. The junior finished the 2021-22 season with 179 rebounds, averaging 6.6 per game.
  • Head coach Trina Patterson added three players in the off-season: Faith Price, Antoniette Emma-Nnopu, and Akira Wiggins.
  • The Spartans were voted to finish seventh in the 2022-23 Coaches poll and sixth in the media poll.
  • They finished the 2021-22 season with a 9-19 overall record, 5-9 in conference. 
SCOUTING GARDNER-WEBB
  • The Runnin' Bulldogs dropped their season opener to Clemson on Monday, 81-54 in South Carolina.
  • Lauren Bevis led Gardner-Webb with 10 points.
  • Alasia Smith and Micahla Funderburk each had eight points, while Smith added four rebounds and five steals.
  • Layken Cox led the Runnin' Bulldogs with eight rebounds.
  • Last season, Gardner-Webb went 16-15 overall and 13-5 in the Big South.
  • The Runnin' Bulldogs were picked as the 2022 Big South Preseason favorites.
  • Gardner-Webb returns four starters and 91.2 percent of the scoring from last year's squad.
  • Smith earned Big South's Preseason Player of the Year honors.
  • Jhessyka Williams and Lauren Bevis were also named to the preseason All-Big South Conference team.
 
SERIES HISTORY
Gardner-Webb leads the all-time series between the two teams, 3-2.
 
The Runnin' Bulldogs won the last meeting, 65-63 in the Coastal Carolina Tournament on November 28, 2021 in Conway, South Carolina.
