ELON, N.C. – Senior
Faith Price came off the bench to lead the UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's basketball team with 15 points as the Spartans dropped a Saturday afternoon contest to in-state rival Elon, 75-58.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Elon opened the contest on a 7-0 run through the first 3:21 of the contest before
Kennedy Simpson's jumper ended the run. The Phoenix extended their lead to eight points with four minutes left in the first quarter and their lead elevated as high as ten with 2:17 left before
Nitzan Amar's layup chopped the lead down to eight.
UNCG kept the Elon lead at nine through the first two minutes of the second quarter, but Elon posted a 7-0 run in response that lasted a 3:44 stretch of the period to extend the Phoenix's lead as large as 16 points. The Spartans stormed back with a 10-2 run through the final 3:20 of the period that included a 7-0 run in the final 1:56 to shrink the Elon lead down to eight, 31-23.
Khalis Cain posted five points in the run, shooting three-of-four from the foul line during the stretch. Simpson added four points in the run including the layup that started the 10-2 run with 3:20 left in the quarter.
The Phoenix opened the third quarter on a 7-2 run through the first 3:49 of the period to reclaim a 13-point lead. The Spartans posted a pair of field goals, to close the deficit to 12. Elon grew their lead back to 16 points with 3:33 remaining in the period, but a pair of three-point field goals from Price 35 seconds apart beginning at the 3:08 mark, brought Elon's lead back down to 12. Elon responded with another 7-0 run over the next 2:17, but another three-pointer from Price broke up the run as the Phoenix ended the period with an 18-point lead.
Elon's lead grew as large as 20 points to start the fourth quarter, but the Spartans cut the lead down to 15 at the 5:05 mark.
Nasia Powell posted back-to-back layups beginning at the 4:18 mark of the period to bring the deficit down to 13, 68-55. Elon maintained the lead down the stretch on the way to the win.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Price's 15 points came on five-of-eight shooting, all from three-point range.
- Cain posted 13 points on three-of-six shooting from the field and seven-of-ten from the foul line, while adding nine rebounds and three steals.
- Simpson was the remaining Spartan in double-figure scoring with ten points on four-of-ten shooting with four rebounds and three steals.
- Powell led the Spartans with four assists.
- UNCG shot 37.5 percent from the field, but shot 66.6 percent from the field in the fourth quarter.
- Elon shot 49.1 from the field.
- The Spartans won the turnover battle, 18-15, and held a 15-11 advantage in steals.
