Women's Tennis Home For A Pair Of Matches This Weekend

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Paul Thomson era begins for the UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's tennis program when it hosts a pair of matches this weekend. The Spartans welcome Georgia State and Richmond to campus.
 
UNCG's weekend starts with Georgia State on Friday at 1 p.m. and concludes with Richmond on Sunday at 12 p.m.
 
A Look At UNCG (1-2 overall)
  • The Spartans are 1-0 at home this season, having defeated North Carolina Central, 4-3, last week.
  • Erika Barquero was a winner for the Spartans at No. 1 singles in UNCG's last match, a 6-1 loss to East Carolina.
  • Barquero has won two straight matches at No. 1 singles.
  • Barquero and Ariana Chan are also 2-1 at No. 1 doubles.
  • Juliana Craft and Olivia Gallagher also have singles victories this season for the Spartans.
  • Craft and McCullough Perry along with the tandem of Gallagher and Hannah Mitchell also have won a doubles match this season.
 
A Look At Georgia State (3-3)
  • Georgia State has won three consecutive matches after beating Lipscomb, 4-0, on Sunday.
  • The Panthers have also beaten Clark Atlanta and Mercer during their winning streak.
  • Georgia State, which has won three matches in four days, has surpassed its win total from last year.
  • Angel Carney has been a key performer for Georgia State at No. 4 singles.
  • In the win over Lipscomb, Georgia State got doubles wins from the tandem of Sofya Golubovskaya and Carney and Andreea Stanescu and Ellie Aldrich.
  • Two of Georgia State's wins have been shutouts.
  • Stanescu was named to the 2021 All-Sun Belt Second Team.
 
A Look At Richmond (1-3)
  • Members of the Atlantic 10 Conference, Richmond defeated Towson in its last outing, 4-1, last Friday.
  • The Spiders have matches against VCU on Thursday afternoon and Davidson on Saturday before meeting the Spartans.
  • The Spiders jumped on the Tigers by winning the doubles point behind victories from the No. 1 doubles team of Emily Dunbar and Sara Salemyr and No. 2 doubles tandem of Carly Cohen and Marta Buendia.
  • Cohen is 2-1 overall at the No. 2 singles position.
  • Helena Heiberg and Buendia earned their first singles victories of the spring in the win over Towson.
  • Richmond has dropped matches to No. 7 Virginia, Elon, and Liberty.
