GREENSBORO, N.C. – In its home opener on Friday afternoon, UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball defeated Rider 10-1 in five innings.
The Spartans scored in each inning to secure its first win at UNCG Softball Stadium in run-rule fashion.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- UNCG loaded the bases right away in the bottom of the first and Jessie Shipley's infield fly brought home Delaney Cumbie for the first run of the game, 1-0.
- The Spartans added another run on Kincer's fielder's choice and error that followed, scoring Matthijs from second to put UNCG up 2-0.
- In the top of the first and second innings, the Broncs left two runners on base.
- After back-to-back walks in the bottom of the second, Matthijs sent out a blast over the left field wall, extending the lead to 5-0.
- Jordan Gontram led off the bottom of the third with a solo home run for a 6-0 advantage.
- The Spartans tacked on four runs in the bottom of the fourth on two hits and three errors from the Broncs for a 10-0 lead.
- Rider squeezed in a run in the top of the fifth to cut the deficit to 10-1, but UNCG retired the side leaving two on base.
NOTES
- Freshman Reese Byrd earned her first-collegiate win tossing 4.0 inning and allowing five hits.
- Three Spartans recorded a multi-hit game including: Makenna Matthijs (2-for-3), Maycin Brown (2-for-2), and Jordan Gontram (2-for-3).
- Matthijs sent out her second long ball of the season.
- Gontram tallied her first home run of the season.
- Both recorded three RBI and two runs scored.
- Delaney Cumbie also scored twice for the Spartans.
- UNCG extends its streak to 5-0 against the Broncs.

UNCG returns to the diamond tomorrow on day two of the Spiro Classic. The Spartans will host George Washington at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, followed by Rider at 4:30 p.m. Both games will be streamed on ESPN3.
