COLUMBIA, S.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's tennis team concluded a challenging two-day weekend by competing against a South Carolina featuring several players ranked among the top 100 nationally.
As a team, South Carolina is ranked 49th in the country in the latest International Tennis Association (ITA) national rankings.
The Spartans dropped a 7-0 decision to the Gamecocks at the Carolina Indoor Tennis Center Sunday afternoon. Yet, they got an opportunity to compete against some of the nation's best, which they know will make them better in the future.
Erika Barquero had the toughest assignment at No. 1 singles. She battled the No. 1 ranked singles player in the nation in Sarah Hamner. Barquero had some nice moments during the match before falling, 6-2, 6-1.
Ariana Chan at No. 2 singles competed against 74th-ranked Ayana Akil.
Juliana Craft also faced a nationally-ranked opponent in 68th-ranked Elise Mills.
At No. 3 doubles,
Olivia Gallagher and
Hannah Mitchell fell 6-3 in a tight match
