GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's tennis team believes the third time will be the charm as it looks to begin its 2022 spring campaign.
After having its opener against Kennesaw State canceled and its next match against UNC Asheville postponed, UNCG hits the road to meet Davidson in a Saturday afternoon showdown at the Knoblach Tennis Center. The match starts at 1 p.m.
UNCG edged Davidson, 4-3, in the last meeting between the programs in 2019.
A Look At UNCG
- UNCG will be looking to win its third straight season-opening match.
- The Spartans won six matches in 2021.
- Erika Barquero, Eugenia Camacho, and Ariana Chan are senior leaders for the Spartans.
- Barquero and Chan didn't play last spring.
- Camacho, a Costa Rica native, represented her home country for the third time in her life during the Billie Jean King Cup, a tennis event held in Panama City, Panama, this past June.
- Redshirt junior Hanna Giddings led UNCG with eight singles victories last season.
- Sophomore Juliana Craft won seven singles matches in 2021 and was 3-0 in singles matches that went three sets.
- UNCG features three newcomers in Olivia Gallagher, Hannah Mitchell, and McCollough Perry.
A Look At Davidson
- After a last-minute scheduling change, Davidson dropped its season-opening match to Wake Forest, 7-0, this past Sunday.
- Junior Josie Schaffer and senior Mira Gladstone both split their matches, taking the first set 6-4 and 6-3 respectively, but ultimately fell to their opponents from Wake.
- Gladstone anchored the Wildcats' doubles team last season.
- She won a team-high 11 matches.
- Davidson is a member of the Atlantic 10 Conference.
- The Wildcats finished last year with six victories.
- They advanced to the Atlantic-10 Tournament quarterfinals.
