UNCG Suffers Non-Conference Setback to Eagles

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Three from the UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team tallied a hit in a 9-3 non-conference setback to Boston College on Tuesday afternoon at UNCG Softball Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • For three innings, neither team allowed a hit as Boston College saw its first base runner in the top of the third.
  • In the top of the fourth and a runner on first, Giery drove the ball to right center scoring Abigail Knight for a 1-0 lead.
  • Delaney Cumbie led off the bottom of the frame being hit by a pitch and with one out Matthijs moved her over on an error by the shortstop.
  • Blayke Batten was also hit by a pitch to load the bases and Grace Loftin walked to tie the game at one.
  • Jordan Gontram then singled to left field bringing home Matthijs and Batten for a two-run lead.
  • With one out and runners on second and third, Mataya connected for a sacrifice fly to center field cutting the deficit to 3-2.
  • The Spartans quickly retired the top of the sixth on a double-play bunt and a groundout to second base before the Eagles tied the game at three with a solo home run from Gianna Sarlo in the top of the second.
  • Boston College put six more runs on the board, including a Giery grand slam to put the Eagles up 9-3.
NOTES
  • Reese Byrd struck out five batters.
  • Cumbie, Matthijs, and Batten scored the runs for the Spartans.
  • Jordan Gontram, Jessie Shipley, and Maxwell had hits.
  • The Eagles totaled seven hits with Nicole Giery and Djhane Valido swinging 2-for-4.
  • Giery tallied five RBI.

ON DECK
UNCG continues its six-game homestand hosting its third home tournament of the season, starting on Thursday and ending on Sunday. Michigan State, Delaware State, Saint Francis (Pa.) and Elon will travel to UNCG Softball Stadium. The Spartans will play Michigan State first in a doubleheader on Thursday, March 10 with a first pitch at 2:00 p.m.
