ELON, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's tennis team opened its season Friday at the three-day Elon Fall Invitational.
 
The Spartans had three doubles wins and two singles victories to begin the 2022-23 season. Three of the five total wins came from freshmen.
 
Freshmen Ella Olexa and Claudia Murdasanu highlighted the day with two doubles wins. They breezed by Norfolk State pair Grant/McMorris with a score of 8-1, while they defeated UNC Asheville's duo of Kruger/Faureng 8-3.
 
Coming back from injury last season, redshirt senior Hanna Giddings and sophomore Olivia Gallagher defeated Richmond pair Campodonico/Oliviera 8-7(2) in a tiebreaker.
 
Giddings also got past her singles opponent in Olivia Archer from Elon with scores of 6-3, 6-4.
 
Freshman Claudia Murdasanu was the final victor for the Spartans dominating in her first-collegiate singles action. Murdasanu surpassed Niya Gran of Norfolk State, 6-2, 6-0.
 
"Congratulations to our freshmen for picking up their first collegiate level victories," stated head coach Paul Thomson. "Congratulations to Hanna for her first win back from injury. We have a lot of stuff to work on, but we have a lot of stuff to be excited about. We're just getting started"
