GREENVILLE, N.C. - The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's soccer had its second-straight shutout and third this season with a 2-0 victory over East Carolina University Sunday afternoon.
As of last week's United Soccer Coaches top 25 poll, the Pirates were receiving votes.
This was the final regular season non-conference battle for the Spartans.
How it Happened:
UNCG took on a skilled ECU team and with lots of back-and-forth, each team struggled to find its opportunities. It was not until the 37
th minute that
Gabi Santora was able to get into the Pirates' 18-yard box. After drawing a foul, Santora lined up for the penalty kick and lifted the ball to the right upper 90, putting the Spartans on the board, 1-0. The Spartans were not done there, however. Just under four minutes later the ball found the feet of sophomore
Nadia Wilson. Getting it out from under her, Wilson was able to look up and split the Pirates' defense, feeding the ball into freshman
Ava Kiss. Kiss went on to break through three defenders and chipped the ball over the Pirates' goalkeeper, giving the Spartans a two-goal lead at the half.
Both teams were just as skilled and evenly matched in the second half, creating good opportunities for themselves, and showing off their strong back lines. The Spartans and Pirates tallied four shots each in the second frame, with just one of ECU's shots coming on goal. Eleven minutes into the second half, the Pirates had their lone shot on goal just outside of the Spartans' 18-yard box.
Abby Buchholz made the diving save with ease, to keep her team ahead by two goals to none.
By the Numbers:
- The Spartans senior goalkeeper Abby Buchholz had a game-high three saves.
- Freshman Ava Kiss scored her first-collegiate goal.
- Gabi Santora scored her fourth-career goal for the Spartans, her first tally this season.
- With the win, the Spartans make it two-straight wins over the Pirates.
- UNCG leads the series 4-3.
From senior goalkeeper Abby Buchholz:
"Having back-to-back shutouts gives us the confidence we need moving forward into conference play. If we can shut out a team like ECU, we can shut out any team. It's just a matter of being focused and disciplined the whole 90 minutes."
Records:
- UNCG: 5-4-1, 1-0-0 SoCon
- ECU: 7-4-1, 2-0-0 American
