Women’s Tennis Bounces Back with 6-1 Win over Presbyterian

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's tennis team finished off three matches in a four-day stretch today with a much needed and well deserved 6-1 victory over the Blue Hose of Presbyterian College. The match was played indoors at the Piedmont Tennis Center and was a dominant day for the Spartans.

After the match, Head Coach Paul Thomson stated, "We played well everywhere today. That's what it takes."

In doubles, the tandem of Olivia Gallagher and Hanna Giddings cruised to a 6-1 win on court one. On court three, Luna Urso and Juliana Craft fell 6-4, but also played a very solid match. Raegan Mitchell and Alexandra Dodashev were in control and serving for the match up 5-3, when an injury forced the Blue Hose pair to retire. This clinched the doubles point for the Spartans, sending the match to the singles portion.

Down a player, Presbyterian gave up the number six singles spot as a result of the injury during doubles. From that point on, the Spartans stomped on the gas and never looked back.

Mitchell took her season tally to 5-0 rolling to a quick 6-1, 6-4 victory. The next court to finish and give the Spartans the overall win was court two. Dodashev found herself today. Playing with poise and passion she took a 6-1, 7-6 (1) decision to close the deal for UNCG.

Arina Babkova was next in line to close out her match. She also played one of her best matches of the year winning 6-2, 6-4. Up 5-0, Gallagher continued with her pattern to draw fierce opponents. Gallagher dropped her match today 3-6, 6-2, 2-6.

With the score 5-1, Urso was the last on court for the second day in a row. Urso bounced back today after her tough three-set loss yesterday winning in straight sets 6-4 ,6-3.

Thomson, reflecting on the day, stated, "We had everyone step up day. We knew going in that we were going to be without Hanna today in the singles lineup. She has struggled a little this year finding her game after missing all of last year. She played great dubs today but needed a day off. Presbyterian is a tough team. They are going to make some noise this year. We still have work to do and will continue to improve. This was a good way to finish the weekend and give us a little pep in our step."

The team will take Monday off and return to practice Tuesday, as they will begin to prepare for a very good Elon squad on Friday, before they open SoCon play Sunday against the reigning regular season and conference champions Furman.
