LAST TIME OUT FOR THE SPARTANS
- The Spartans began the 2023-24 season dropping a 71-65 matchup at App State on Monday, Nov. 6.
- UNCG controlled the majority of the first half to only allow the Mountaineers to lead once (19-18). However, App State was able to take control in the second half for the win.
- Isys Grady led both teams by recording a new career game high of 23 points.
- Ayanna Khalfani led the Spartans with six boards on the day and followed behind Grady with nine points.
- Jayde Gamble led the way with three steals.
SCOUTING THE SPARTANS
- The Spartans were picked to finish sixth in the 2023-24 SoCon Preseason Coaches' Poll, trailing ETSU, Chattanooga, Mercer, Wofford and Furman and coming in front of Samford and Western Carolina.
- After Grady's efforts in the 2022-23 season, the junior was named the 2023-24 SoCon Preseason All-Conference Team.
- UNCG concluded the 2022-23 season at The Southern Conference (SoCon) Tournament in a semifinal matchup to Wofford, dropping the game by just two scoring possessions (68-63). The team defeated Mercer, 63-59 in an overtime deciding win to clinch a six-game win streak from the regular season to the semifinals.
- As a team, UNCG finished the season 40th nationally in offensive rebounds per game (13.8), and 79th in bench points per game (21.0).
- In SoCon action, the Spartans finished in the top five in 19 categories, including first in bench points per game (21), turnovers per game (16.33), and blocks per game (3.5). UNCG finished second in assist/turnover ratio (0.82), offensive rebounds per game (13.8), and turnover margin (1.93).
- Nasia Powell is the returning leading scorer for the Spartans after averaging 9.9 points per game in the 2022-23 season. Powell appeared and started in nine games last season, due to a season-ending injury.
- Grady follows closely behind Powell as the second returning leading scorer on the squad. Grady finished the season with a 8.5 scoring average over 21 games played.
SCOUTING THE BULLDOGS
- South Carolina State opened its 2023-24 campaign at the University of Utah on Thursday, Nov. 9 before coming to Greensboro on Saturday.
- Janiah Hinton returns as a key player for the Bulldogs after nodding 160 points, 88 rebounds, 43 assists and 18 steals in the 2022-23 season.
- Mekayla Lumplin follows closely behind after recording 114 points, 47 rebounds, 46 assists and 20 steals last season.
- The Spartans and Bulldogs will play two of the same opponents this season in Coastal Carolina and with South Carolina State taking on SoCon foe, Furman in its non-conference schedule.
- The Bulldogs were picked to finish eighth in the MEAC (Mid-Eastern Atlantic Conference) with 18 points.
SERIES HISTORY
The two teams last met in the 2022-23 season in Orangeburg, S.C., when the Bulldogs captured a 64-53 win over the Spartans. However, UNCG leads in the overall series against South Carolina State at 3-1.
