BLACKSBURG, Va. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's basketball team dropped its contest to No. 9 Virginia Tech, 72-51 in Cassell Coliseum on Monday evening.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The first quarter saw the most back-and-forth action between the Hokies and the Spartans with five ties and four lead changes. A pull up jumper from
Nia Howard, followed by a basket from
Jayde Gamble ended the first quarter with UNCG trailing by one, 17-16.
Virginia Tech was able to widen its lead in the second quarter by recording a 10-2 run to start it off. A final three-pointer from the Hokies' Cayla King gave the team a 14-point lead at the half, 39-25.
The Spartans outscored the Hokies 16-14 in the third quarter.UNCG closed out the third frame with a 9-4 run with seven of those scores coming at the free-throw line for the Spartans. The Hokies continued to lead at the end of the third quarter, 56-41.
Virginia Tech opened up the final quarter with a 13-1 run over the Spartans. The Hokies gained their largest lead in the fourth quarter at the 5:51 mark for a 26-point margin.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Gamble scored a new career game high of 25 points in the game. She added a new career high of 12 field-goals made.
- Ayanna Khalfani paced the Spartans with eight points.
- Khalis Cain stood out with five boards.
- The Spartans had a total of 30 rebounds.
- Elizabeth Kitley led both teams with a double-double by scoring 31 points and posting 10 boards.
