Women’s Basketball Never Trails in 64-47 Victory

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's basketball team took a 64-47 victory from Gardner-Webb Sunday afternoon in Fleming Gymnasium to remain undefeated at home. The Spartans never allowed the Runnin' Bulldogs to lead in the game.

The last time UNCG started off a season 4-0 at home was in 2018-19.

HOW IT HAPPENED
A three-point jumper from Isys Grady put UNCG on the board first in the game and started a 12-2 run for the Spartans in the first frame. The Spartans used 80-percent (4-for-5) shooting from behind the arc to propel them past the Running' Bulldogs in the first quarter. Back-to-back three's from Nasia Powell and Kennedy Simpson allowed the Spartans lead by 14, 22-8 at the end of the first quarter.

UNCG continued to outscore the Runnin' Bulldogs 13-7 in the second quarter to head into the break, 35-15.

Gardner-Webb found its stride coming out of the half to start things off with a 6-2 run over UNCG. However, UNCG responded with a 12-2 run to maintain the lead. With a little over two minutes remaining in the third quarter, a layup from Ayanna Khalfani gave UNCG its biggest advantage of the game with a 51-25 lead over the Bulldogs. The Spartans headed into the final quarter on top, 54-32.

The Bulldogs were able to outscore the Spartans 15-10 in the final quarter, but it wouldn't be enough for the visiting team to come back.

  • Khalfani and Jayde Gamble led the Spartans in scoring with 12 and 11 points, respectively.
