Women's Basketball Drops Contest in Chapel Hill

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's basketball team dropped a 81-66 contest to No. 24 North Carolina at Carmichael Arena on Wednesday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Tar Heels got on the board first to never allow the Spartans to lead in the first frame. North Carolina went 10-for-20 from the field to finish out the first quarter on top, 22-9.
 
The Spartans found its stride in the second quarter by going 5-for-5 from behind the arc. Four of those three-pointers came from Kennedy Simpson alone. UNCG outscored the Tar Heels 25-14 in the second frame. A three-pointer from Kelly Boyle, followed by a layup from Ayanna Khalfani tied the game at 34 apiece. North Carolina's Alyssa Ustby drove through the lane for a layup giving the Tar Heels a two-point advantage, 36-34, heading into halftime.
 
The Tar Heels came out of the break and utilized a 15-2 run to climb to a 15-point advantage, 51-26. UNCG responded with a 12-5 run cutting the deficit to single digits, 61-56. 
 
North Carolina was able to close out the contest by outscoring the Spartans 20-10 in the final frame for the 81-66 win.
 
BY THE NUMBERS
  • Simpson went 5-for-5 in three-pointers to match her single game career record.
  • Isys Grady led the team in scoring with 17 points.
  • Antoniette Emma-Nnopu led UNCG with eight rebounds.
  • Khalis Cain followed closely behind with seven boards.
  • Khalfani notched four dimes and posted two blocks.
  • UNCG posted 27 points off the bench to North Carolina's 11.
  • The Spartans recorded eight steals, while North Carolina posted six.
