FORT MYERS, FLA. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team fell to host Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU), 3-4, and Southern Illinois University (SIU), 6-9, on Saturday night at the FGCU Softball Complex.
GAME 1: FGCU 4 – UNCG 3
HOW IT HAPPENED:
FGCU got on the board first with a sacrifice fly from Kayleigh Roper in the bottom of the first for a 1-0 lead.
UNCG fought back with a big three-run third inning.
Brooklynn Maxwell led off the top of the third with a triple to right center and
Maycin Brown drove her in on a single.
Delaney Cumbie followed with her own single bringing home Brown for the second run. With two outs,
Samantha Lagrama connected for a ball down the left field line giving the Spartans a 3-1 lead.
The Eagles cut the deficit to one, 3-2, with a sacrifice fly from Nikki Gibson in the bottom of the third. In the bottom of the sixth, FGCU strung together its offense and Madison Carr doubled, driving in two runs for the eventual game-winning hit, 4-3.
NOTES
- Cumbie went 3-for-4 with one RBI and a double.
- Maxwell, Brown, and Lagrama each had a hit.
- Brown hit her first triple of the season.

GAME 2: SIU 9 – UNCG 6
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Southern Illinois combined for six runs between the first and second innings behind seven of its 10 hits in the game.
UNCG countered in the bottom of the second. With two outs and the bases loaded,
Maycin Brown clubbed a long ball over the right field fence for a grand slam to cut the deficit to two, 4-6. This was her second homer of the season.
Chartrand used the Spartans' energy to retire three-straight Salukis in the top of the third by ground outs before UNCG continued to chip away at the score. In the bottom of the frame,
Grace Loftin's single brought in
Blayke Batten for a one-run game, 5-6. Chartrand then reached on an error to force Shipley across the plate for a tied game at six.
SIU was not done, as Hamilton connected on an 0-2 count for a three-run homer in the top of the fourth with one out, 9-6. For the next three innings, SIU tallied one hit, as the Spartans had one hit in each frame.
NOTES
- Brown crushed the Spartan's first grand slam of the season for four RBI.
- Jorde Chartrand went 3-for-4 at the plate, as the lone Spartan with multiple hits.
- Chartrand and Maxwell each had a double
- Salem Ward struck out four batters in 3.2 innings of work and allowed just one hit.
- Cumbie, Maxwell, and Brown are all on a four-game hitting streak.
