Four Spartans Score Double Figures to Power Past Western Carolina, 72-59

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Four from the UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's basketball team scored double-digit points, as the Spartans dominated in a 72-59 victory over Western Carolina Catamounts on Saturday evening in Fleming Gym.
 
Faith Price led UNCG with 13 points, while Akira Wiggins, Nia Howard, and Isys Grady each had 10 points.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED

Isys Grady had a free throw in the first 21 seconds of the quarter to start the game. The Spartans held the Catamounts scoreless for the first four minutes and 48 seconds, as Western Carolina scored to cut the deficit to seven, 8-1. The Spartans saw its first double-digit lead at 3:16, 14-3.
 
Western Carolina's Ewa Kielar had a layup to bring the deficit to 10, 12-22. UNCG saw an 18-point lead two times in the frame, once with Wiggins driving to the basket for a layup at 1:58 and then again with one in the paint from Howard at 1:02, 39-21.
 
UNCG maintained a double-digit advantage throughout the third quarter. The Catamounts were only able to string together back-to-back buckets a few times during the third frame, for its longest run of four points. Nitzan Amar made back-to-back baskets at the end of the frame for the Spartans, before Western Carolina's Kielar made a jumper for a 16-point deficit, 41-57, with 32 seconds left.
 
UNCG saw its largest lead of 19 at 9:01 in the fourth quarter, 60-41, on a free throw from Howard. The two teams traded baskets in the frame ending with, Western Carolina's Allison who had a three pointer with 15 seconds left in the game, to end with a 13-point deficit, 59-72.

  • The Spartans had 21 bench points to the Catamounts' 10.
  • UNCG had 46 points in the paint compared to Western Carolina's 30.
  • Antoniette Emma-Nnopu had a team-high of six rebounds.
