Women’s Tennis Falls in SoCon Opener to Furman

GREENVILLE, S.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's tennis team fell 7-0 to Furman University Sunday afternoon in Greenville, S.C. to open Southern Conference (SoCon) play.

"Unfortunately, we didn't play our best tennis today," said Head Coach Paul Thomson. "We were flat almost everywhere in doubles. Today is not who we are."

The Spartans dropped all three doubles matches today in lackluster fashion. Losing 6-0, 6-1, 6-1, respectively on courts one, two, and three.

Down 0-1 to the defending SoCon champions, the Spartans tried to claw their way back into the match playing several close first sets. However, all six courts dropped the first set. "We tried to collect ourselves," Thomson continued. "We simply did not match the effort and energy we had on Friday. Hanna Giddings and Raegan Mitchell played two complete sets on courts two and six. Hanna, Olivia Gallagher and Arina Babkova all drop second set breakers trying to get into third sets. Past that it wasn't our best day. Furman is the team to beat in the SoCon. They jumped on us in doubles and didn't look back. I was expecting us to come out swinging today on all cylinders. We simply never really got it going."

The Spartans will regroup beginning tomorrow with a lift session, taking the day off the courts. They will be back to work on Tuesday and Wednesday in preparation for a home visit from Radford on Thursday, and Belmont Abbey Saturday morning. They ladies will conclude the week's slate with a Saturday afternoon bout in Winston-Salem versus Wake Forest.
