Softball Sweeps Elon in Doubleheader

GREENSBORO, N.C.- Late-game heroics lifted UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball to a doubleheader sweep of visiting Elon University Saturday in the UNCG Softball Stadium.

UNCG improved to 11-7 with the wins. Elon dropped to 5-13. The teams conclude a three-game set Sunday at Elon with a first pitch slated for 1 p.m. at Hunt Softball Park.

Maycin Brown hit a walk-off, two-run homer in the Spartans' 3-2 opening-game win.

Jessie Shipley's three-run blast in the fifth broke a tie game in UNCG's 10-5 comeback victory in the nightcap.

Game 1
HOW IT HAPPENED
Elon opened the scoring on Claudia Penny's solo homer to left in the third inning, 1-0.

UNCG answered in the bottom of the inning when Blayke Batten led off with a double and scored on Brown's groundout. Jorde Chartrand followed with an infield single to put runners at the corners with two out, but the rally stalled.

The Phoenix took the lead back, scoring on a wild pitch in the top of the fourth. The Spartans worked out of the jam thanks in part to a heads-up play by catcher Delaney Cumbie, who chased down and tagged out Elon's Kaitlyn Wells, who tried to score on a Megan Grant bunt.

NOTES
  • Salem Ward came in as a relief pitcher in the sixth, notching her third win of the year with 1.2 innings of scoreless relief.
  • Brown drove in all three Spartans' runs boosting her team-leading total to 20 through 18 games.
  • Her seven home runs also top the team.
  • Chartrand and Cumbie shared team- and game-high honors with two hits apiece.
  • Cumbie reached base in all four plate appearances.
  • Batten's double marked her team-leading sixth of the season.
Game 2
HOW IT HAPPENED
Elon jumped out to a 3-0 lead after two frames behind Allee Seering's solo homer in the first and a pair of second-inning runs.

Spartans' starter Maddie Spell (3-2) retired nine of Elon's next 10 batters and gave UNCG's offense a chance to respond.

UNCG answered with three third-inning runs despite just one hit, an infield single, in the frame. Chartrand drew a bases-loaded walk, Samantha Lagrama had a RBI fielder's choice, and Batten tied the game at 3-3 on a sacrifice fly to deep left field.

The game stayed tied at 3-3 until the fifth when UNCG's Batten and Brooklynn Maxwell drew back-to-back walks from Elon starter Isley Duggins (1-5). After an Elon mound visit, Shipley jumped on Duggins' next pitch and drilled it over the left-field fence to give UNCG its first lead of the game, 6-3.

Elon answered with two unearned runs in the sixth inning, which made it a 6-5 game.

The Spartans sealed the win with four runs in the bottom of the sixth, including Anna White's two-run double to right-center field and Batten's two-run blast to left, her first of the season.

Maddie Spell threw her team-best fourth complete game of the season. The left-hander allowed two earned runs and scattered 11 hits over seven innings.

NOTES
  • Elon outhit UNCG, 11-5, but the Spartans took advantage of eight walks, three hit batters, and a wild pitch by Phoenix pitchers.
  • The Spartans' Grace Loftin walked in each of her three at bats and scored twice.
  • Brown and Batten also scored two runs.
