Softball Halted in 8-1 Loss to No. 10 Duke

DURHAM, N.C.- The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team held No. 10 Duke to 3-1, until the bottom of the sixth. The Blue Devils ended up with the non-conference win, 8-1, on Wednesday night at Duke Softball Stadium.
 
Fifth year Delaney Cumbie had UNCG's two hits, swinging 2-for-3 at the plate.
 
UNCG is now 26-18 overall Duke improved to 37-18.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
After a scoreless first inning, Duke capitalized on four hits and two errors to score three runs in the bottom of the second.
 
UNCG responded in the top of the third as Brooklynn Maxwell walked, Cumbie singled, and Jorde Chartrand walked to load the bases. Samantha then walked to score the Spartans' only run of the game, 3-1.
 
The Spartans' outfield made some great plays, including a laser from left fielder Grace Loftin to Maycin Brown at second retiring Rodriguez in the bottom of the first for the first out. Jaden Cheek ended the inning with a diving catch in left center field for three-straight outs.
 
The Blue Devils had an offensive attack in the bottom of the sixth tallying five hits for five runs, extending their lead, 8-1.
 
NOTES:
  • Cumbie went 2-for-3 at the plate.
  • Maxwell scored the lone run for the Spartans and walked twice.
  • Jorde Chartrand also walked twice.
  • Lagrama had the lone RBI, walking once.

ON DECK
The Spartans return to Southern Conference (SoCon) action with their three-game series against Chattanooga this weekend. UNCG faces the Mocs on Saturday for a doubleheader with a first pitch at 1:00 p.m.
