CHATTANOOGA, TENN. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's tennis team who was the eighth seed in the Southern Conference (SoCon) Women's Tennis Tournament fell to the top-seeded Furman Paladins, 4-0, on Thursday afternoon at the Champions Club.
The Spartans battled through each and every point.
The Paladins took the doubles point winning on courts three and then one with scores of 6-3 on both.
Furman then won the first three singles matches on courts three, five, then four. All three were won in straight sets. With three unfinished singles matches,
Arina Babkova took her opponent on court one to a tiebreaker in set one, while courts two and six were battling hard before match was called.
"I know our record wasn't great," stated Head Coach
Paul Thomson. "But this team is better. We grew. They know what it's like now. The gas pedal is down starting this fall. This team is coming."
Some stats from this year include:
- The Spartans won 40 singles courts & 20 doubles courts.
- Last year combined they won 22 matches.
- The five team wins are double plus one from last year's record.
- Raegan Mitchell was the first Spartan with double-digit wins for at least the last six years.
The top-seeded Furman Paladins continue play with a semifinal match tomorrow, Friday, April 21 with a 2:00 p.m. start time against the winner of No. 4 Mercer/No. 5 Chattanooga.
