Women's Basketball to Begin 2024-25 Season Hosting North Greenville

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's basketball team will begin its 2024-25 season by hosting the Crusaders of North Greenville on Monday in Fleming Gym for a 5:00 p.m. tip-off.

SERIES HISTORY
Monday's matchup between the Spartans and Crusaders marks the first meeting in program history between the two teams.
 
ABOUT THE SPARTANS
  • The Spartans went 21-12 overall and 8-6 in league play in the 2023-24 season.
  • UNCG appeared in The Southern Conference (SoCon) Championship for the seventh time in program history, falling to Chattanooga, 69-60.
  • UNCG concluded the 2023-24 season second in the conference across five statistical categories: rebound margin (5.1), rebounds per game (38.94), scoring margin (7.3), turnover margin (1.24) and winning percentage (63.6).
  • The Spartans finished last season with a 15-1 home record, for their best home record since the 2001-02 season.
  • The 2024-25 roster features 10 returners and five newcomers with three transfers and two freshmen.
  • Three of last year's starters have returned this season in Khalis Cain, Jayde Gamble and Nia Howard.
  • Head Coach Trina Patterson enters her ninth season at the helm of the Blue & Gold.
  • Patterson tallied her third season achieving 20 or more wins last year, leading UNCG to finish second in the regular season.
  • The Spartans were picked to finish second in the 2024-25 SoCon Preseason Coaches' Poll with one first-place vote.
  • Cain and Gamble were selected to the SoCon Preseason All-SoCon Team.
  • Named to the 2023-24 SoCon First-Team All-Conference, Gamble returns as the leading scorer on the team with 463 points and a 14.0 points per game average last season
  • The senior guard led the squad from behind-the-arc last year with 41 three-pointers, averaging 1.2 three-pointers per game. In addition, the Holly Springs, North Carolina, native led the SoCon with 68 steals last season.
  • Cain was the leader for the Spartans last season with 249 rebounds, averaging 7.5 per game.
  • The graduate student also paced the team with 34 total blocks, becoming the UNCG career program leader in blocks last season. Cain led the conference with a 3.8 offensive rebound per game average to conclude the 2023-24 stanza.
 
SCOUTING NORTH GREENVILLE
  • North Greenville concluded the 2023-24 season with a 17-10 overall record and 10-8 in the Conference Carolinas (CC).
  • Monday's contest will be an exhibition match for the Crusaders as the team competes in the NCAA Division II in the CC league.
  • The Crusaders were picked to finished tied for fifth in the CC Preseason Poll.
  • Amaijah Smith, Abi Oates and Ja'Mari Frederick were selected as CC Preseason Players to Watch for the 2024-25 season.
  • Smith was named to the 2024 third team All-Conference Carolinas.
  • Tabitha Littlefield finished the 2023-24 season as the second-best leading scorer with 260 points, averaging 10.0 a game.
  • Oates returns to the team as the best three-point shooter from last season after collecting 64.
  • The Crusaders outscored their opponents last season, 1,762-1,600.
  • Head Coach Kevin Long Jr. enters his sixth season at the helm of the North Greenville women's basketball squad.
  • North Greenville will begin its 2024-25 regular season by hosting Augusta University on Friday, Nov. 8 at 11:30 a.m. in Tigerville, South Carolina.

UP NEXT
The Spartans will continue at home by hosting USC Upstate on Saturday, Nov. 9 at noon in Fleming Gym.
 
Saturday's game against USC Upstate will feature a family four pack where a family of four can purchase tickets for $20. In addition, the first 100 UNCG students receive a free UNCG rope hat. This game will also feature an Operation Christmas Child Donation Drive and it is Youth Team Night!
