COLUMBIA, S.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team split its doubleheader on day two of the Carolina Classic, first falling to Virginia, 7-2, but then taking a 5-4 come-from-behind win over Jacksonville State on Saturday at Beckham Field.
UNCG totaled 10 hits in the game against Jacksonville State for the first time this season with double-digit hits.
Game 1: Virginia 7 – UNCG 2
Virginia scored five runs between the third and fifth innings, 5-0, putting two tallies on the board in the third and fourth frames. The Spartans cut the deficit to four, 5-1, with a bases-loaded RBI walk in the bottom of the fifth.
The Cavaliers Bella Cabral hit a solo home run over the left field wall to get back to a five-run lead, 6-1 in the top of the seventh. Kelsey Hackett added Virginia's seventh run with a RBI triple to right center before
Salem Ward retired the side with her fourth strikeout of the game, 7-1.
In a last chance effort,
Brooklynn Maxwell doubled to left field and with one out moved over to third.
Grace Loftin walked and Maxwell was able to score on the passed ball, 7-2. Virginia retired the side with a strikeout and a fielder's choice to secure the win.
Rhyann Jones added four strikeouts of her own in the circle.
Tori Dalehite went 2-for-3 on the day with one run scored.

Game 2: UNCG 5 – Jacksonville State 4
Jacksonville State got on the board first on an RBI double from Lindsey Richardson to left field, 1-0. Neither team put up a run in the second and third innings, as UNCG took the advantage in the bottom of the fourth.
The Spartans strung together three hits and utilized one error for two runs in the bottom of the fourth for a 2-1 lead.
Betsy Eatmon tallied her first-collegiate hit to lead off the frame. With runners on first and second, the Spartans advanced on a wild pitch before
Kiley McQuillan singled through the left side bringing home two runs.
The Gamecocks tied the game in the top of the fifth on an RBI double from Kenzie Nicholson. The Spartans took back the lead in the bottom of the frame as Maxwell hit a solo shot over the left field wall and Loftin crushed a two-run blast to center field for a three-run advantage, 5-2.
After a scoreless sixth inning, Jacksonville State looked to fight back, but was only able to squeeze across two runs on Morgan Nowakowski's RBI double and Amber Reed's sacrifice fly, 5-4.
Maxwell went 2-for-4 with one run scored and one RBI. McQuillan swung 2-for-3 at the plate with two RBI.
Tori Dalehite also went 2-for-3 at the plate.

UNCG wraps up the Carolina Classic tomorrow on Sunday, February 11 with a 10:00 a.m. first pitch against Jacksonville State at Beckham Field. Following that game, the Spartans return to Greensboro to host Winthrop on Wednesday, February 14 for a doubleheader starting at 3:00 p.m. at the UNCG Softball Stadium.
