Women's Tennis Hosts ETSU & Belmont Abbey and Compete Away at Davidson

GREENSBORO, N.C. - The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's tennis team will continue the 2024 schedule with three matches this week. The Spartans will open up The Southern Conference (SoCon) schedule with ETSU on Thursday, Feb. 15 at the UNCG Tennis Courts at 1 p.m. The team will continue in Greensboro by hosting Belmont Abbey on Saturday, Feb. 17 at 1 p.m. with the location still to be determined. UNCG will round out the week by heading to Davidson on Sunday, Feb. 18 for a 1:00 p.m. start at the Davidson Tennis Courts.

SCOUTING THE SPARTANS
  • The Spartans head into the week with an 0-5 overall record on the spring slate.
  • UNCG most recently dropped a 5-2 contest to UNC Wilmington on Sunday, Feb. 11 in the Piedmont Indoor Tennis Center.
  • With UNC Wilmington already clinching the doubles point, Juliana Craft and Lauren Thomson came away with a 6-3 victory over Alex Borcich and Ana Parker Shumate on court two.
  • The Spartans were able to claim the final two singles points. The first going to Thomson in a 2-6, 6-1, 6-3 victory over Alicia Eberwein on court five. The second point went the way for Sydney Bly, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 over Lucia Gomez to close out Sunday's matchup.
  • Thomson and Bly lead the Spartans across singles play this season with two wins a piece.
SCOUTING THE BUCS
  • ETSU comes to Greensboro with a 1-4 overall record this spring.
  • The Bucs most recently dropped a 7-0 contest at No. 19 Tennessee on Saturday, Feb. 10.
  • Sofia Markova (6-2, 6-4) and Daniela Rivera (6-3, 6-2) had the best showings for the Bucs against nationally ranked players.
  • Ralitsa Alexandrova and Markova leads ETSU across singles play this season, both with a 3-2 overall record.
  • Alessandra and Markova lead the Bucs in doubles action with a 2-3 record.
  • Thursday's contest against the Spartans will also mark the start of SoCon play for the Bucs as well.  
SCOUTING THE CRUSADERS
  • Belmont Abbey heads into the week with a 4-3 overall record.
  • The Crusaders will compete in three other matches this week. They will host Piedmont and USC Sumter on Wednesday, Feb. 14. In addition, part of the team will go to Pfeiffer on Saturday, Feb. 17, while the other half will come to UNCG.  
  • Hanley Riner leads the Crusaders in singles play with a 3-3 overall record this season.
  • Riner and Mackenzie McCarthy pace the team in doubles action with a 3-2 record.
  • The team most recently took two losses to Presbyterian and a loss to North Carolina Wesleyan on Friday, Feb. 9.
SCOUTING THE WILDCATS
  • Davidson currently stands at 3-2 overall this season.
  • The Wildcats started off the 2024 spring slate with three consecutive wins over Queens, App State and UNC Asheville.
  • Davidson has dropped its last two matches on the road to SoCon foe, Western Carolina and most recently to Virginia Commonwealth University on Saturday, Feb. 10.
  • The Wildcats are undefeated at the Davidson Tennis Courts this season.
  • The team will host North Carolina Central University on Saturday, Feb. 17 at 1 p.m. before welcoming the Spartans on Sunday, Feb. 18.
 
UP NEXT
Following this week's matches, UNCG will host Queens on Saturday, Feb. 24 at the Piedmont Indoor Tennis Center for a noon start.
