GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team fell to UMass in its first game of the day on Friday, 7-2, at the UNCG Softball Stadium. The Spartans then walked off against Charleston Southern in a 4-2 nine inning battle Friday night.
UNCG is now 13-12 overall.
Game 1: UMass 7 – UNCG 2
UMass immediately threatened with its first runner on base in the top of the first and then loaded the bases in the top of the second, but the Spartans'
Jorde Chartrand retired the side with her first strikeout of the day.
UNCG had its first base runner in the bottom of the second as
Meredith Harwood singled through the left side. The Minutewomen took charge in the top of the third scoring six runs on five hits and one error.
UMASS added a run in the top of the sixth for a 7-0 advantage as Abby Packard hit a one-out double down the left field line to score Sarah Keagy.
The Spartans'
Brooklynn Maxwell in the leadoff spot in the bottom of the sixth took a 2-2 over the left field wall for her eighth homer of the season cutting the deficit to six, 7-1. UNCG's defense contained UMass in the seventh, striking out two of the four batters that inning.
The Spartans were able to add one more run in the bottom of the seventh, as
Betsy Eatmon crushed her second-career home run on her first pitch of the at bat to left center, 7-2.
Jaden Cheek and
Rylie Williams each singled, but UMass retired the side and held on for the 7-2 win.

Game 2:
Charleston Southern put two runs on the board in the top of the first inning. With two runners in scoring position and two outs, Yourman singled up the middle driving in both Buccaneers for a 2-0 lead.
The Spartans put two hits on the board but were unable to push them across home.
After a scoreless second inning for both teams, UNCG tied the game in the bottom of the third.
Jaden Cheek led off the frame with a double and was quickly moved to third on an error during
Brooklynn Maxwell's at bat. With those two in scoring position,
Grace Loftin singled to right field bringing home Cheek, 2-1.
Anna White then dropped a sacrifice bunt that advanced Maxwell across the plate to tie the game.
Neither team was successful in putting a run across from the fourth to eighth innings. With the international tiebreaker on in the eighth, the Spartans left the bases loaded heading into the ninth.
Rhyann Jones had runners on first and second but retired the side with her eighth strikeout of the game.
With
Jessie Shipley on second in the bottom of the ninth,
Brooklynn Maxwell crushed a 1-1 count to left center for her ninth homer of the season securing the win for the Spartans, 4-2.
