Softball Hits Past Western Carolina, 6-1

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team defeated Western Carolina with a score of 6-1 on Friday night at the Catamount Softball Complex in The Southern Conference (SoCon) play.
 
This was the 10th game this season with 10 or more hits for the Spartans. When totalling 10 or more hits, UNCG is 10-0 this season.
 
The Spartans put the first run and hit of the game on the board in the top of the first, as Grace Loftin hit her 12th home run of the season to center field for a 1-0 advantage. Brooklynn Maxwell doubled the score, 2-0, with her 14th blast of the season with one out in the top of the third.
 
UNCG added three more runs in the top of the fourth for a 5-0 advantage. With two outs and a runner on first, Jorde Chartrand doubled to left center driving in Maycin Brown, 3-0. Betsy Eatmon followed with a single to left field putting runners on the corners. Tori Dalehite made it 4-0 with a double down the left field line and putting runners on second and third. On a wild pitch, Eatmon crossed home plate for a 5-0 score.
 
Later, in the top of the seventh, with one out and runners on second and third, Chartrand flew out to left field to score Anna White for a 6-0 lead.
 
Becka Wonsick gave the Catamounts their lone run on a solo homer to start off the bottom of the seventh, cutting the deficit to five, 6-1. Salem Ward came in relief for the Spartans and got back-to-back outs before Western Carolina put runners on first and second. UNCG got the last out on a grounder to hold on for the win.
 
NOTES
  • In Chartrand's sixth start in the circle this season, she struck out a season-high six batters.
  • Three Spartans had multi-game hits in the game.
  • Brown went 2-for-3 with one run scored and two doubles.
  • Chartrand hit 2-for-3 with one run scored, two RBI, and a double.
  • Eatmon went 2-for-3 with one run.
