BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team dropped the final game of the series against Samford with a 2-1 score in nine innings at Samford Softball Field on Sunday.
UNCG saw the first base runner of the game as
Grace Loftin walked in the top of the first but was stranded as the Bulldogs retired the side. Samford tallied the first hit of the game in the bottom of the first, but
Samantha Beck threw a laser to second getting that runner out to close out the frame.
In the top of the fourth with two outs and a runner on first,
Kiley McQuillan singled to center field and Brown advanced to third.
Blayke Batten then singled up the middle to score Brown for a 1-0 advantage for the Spartans.
Samford responded in the bottom of the fourth, as Logan Champion hit an RBI single through the left side that pushed across Sarah Squillace to tie the game, 1-1.
Neither team was able to get a run across in the remaining innings, taking the game into extra frames.
The Spartans stranded one runner in the top of the eighth and Samford went down three straight batters in the bottom on ground outs.
In the ninth, Champion hit a single and Campbell followed with a fielder's choice. Champion was safe at second on a throwing error and made her way around the bases to score the game-winning run, 2-1.
