CLINTON, S.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's basketball team secured a 57-53 battle over the Presbyterian Blue Hose on Friday night in Clinton, South Carolina, at the Templeton Center.
Makiah Asidanya led all scorers with 18 points, while
Jeni Levine added 17 points.
Rylan Moffitt chipped in 11 points to round out the Spartans in double-figures.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Asidanya got the scoring started in the contest with a triple off the wing at 9:33. Presbyterian got its first bucket with a layup at 9:12 before the Spartans tallied four consecutive points for a 7-2 advantage. The Blue Hose were able to respond with an 11-0 run for a 12-17 lead. After a media timeout at 3:41, the Spartans notched eight unanswered points for a 15-12 lead in the final minute of the first frame. The Blue Hose collected the last two points of the quarter as both teams went into the break with UNCG holding a one-point advantage, 15-14.
The Spartans continued their momentum in the second quarter, notching a 6-2 run to get the frame started. Presbyterian chipped in a three-pointer at 4:47 before Levine recorded a four-point play at 4:15 to begin a 9-2 Spartan run for the squad's biggest lead of the game, 30-21. The Blue Hose posted the final three points of the stanza, but UNCG held the six-point lead heading to the locker room, 30-24.
Coming out of the break, Presbyterian recorded a 13-1 run to regain the lead, 37-31. UNCG was able to outscore Presbyterian 7-6 for the remainder of the frame, but the Blue Hose held a 43-38 lead at the end of the quarter.
UNCG turned on the momentum in the final quarter starting things off with an 8-3 run to knot the game up at 46. Both teams would continue to go back-and-forth, but Presbyterian maintained the advantage until a three-pointer from Asidanya with 20 seconds remaining gave the Spartans a 55-53 lead. The Blue Hose continued to fight but it wouldn't be enough.
Rylan Moffitt went 2-for-2 at the charity stripe to grant UNCG with the 57-53 victory.
