Women’s Basketball to Open 2025-26 Season with Trip to California

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's basketball team is set to begin the 2025-26 season with a trip to the West Coast. The Spartans will tip off the season at Stanford on Monday at 10:00 p.m. EST/7:00 p.m. PST at Maples Pavilion. UNCG will then take on San Francisco on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. EST/4:30 p.m. PST at War Memorial at The Sobrato Center.

ABOUT THE SPARTANS
  • UNCG comes into the 2025-26 season after a historic 2024-25 campaign.
  • The Spartans earned a spot in the NCAA Tournament last season for the first time since 1998. The team defeated Chattanooga, 64-57, in The 2025 Southern Conference (SoCon) Championship, earning an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament.
  • The team fell to No. 1 USC in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament at the Galen Center in Los Angeles, California.
  • UNCG wrapped up the 2025 conference slate with a 13-1 record, marking its best SoCon regular season finish in program history to earn the SoCon Regular Season Title.
  • The reigning SoCon Coach of the Year, Head Coach Trina Patterson enters her 10th year with the Blue & Gold this season.
  • UNCG tallied 14 consecutive victories last season for the longest winning streak in the Division I era. The squad also concluded the season with 25 wins for the most victories in the UNCG Division I era and tied for third all-time, marking the winningest season for Patterson.
  • The Spartans concluded the 2024-25 regular season slate undefeated at home at 14-0. This was the second time in program history that UNCG has went undefeated at home and first time in the UNCG Division I era.
  • The 2025-26 roster features five returners and eight newcomers. Four of the newcomers are freshmen, while the other four are transfer students.
  • Senior Jaila Lee and junior Makiah Asidanya were selected to the SoCon Preseason All-Conference Team after both of their stellar performances last season.
  • Lee started in all 32 games in her first season as a Spartan last year. She is the leading returning scorer for the squad, averaging 9.3 points per game in the 2024-25 season. 
  • Asidanya came in off the bench in all 32 games last season, tallying 11 double-figure scoring games. She returns as the leader from behind the arc with 33 made three-pointers on the 2024-25 slate. 
  • UNCG was voted to finish second with two first-place votes in the SoCon Preseason Coaches' Poll.
 SCOUTING STANFORD
  • Stanford concluded the 2024-25 season with a 16-15 overall record and 8-10 mark in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC).
  • The Cardinal fell to Clemson in the first round of the ACC Tournament, 63-43, in Greensboro.
  • The team earned a spot in the WBIT last season, but lost to Portland in an overtime battle, 69-68, in the first round to conclude the season.
  • Stanford returns 10 letterwinners to the squad, including All-ACC Second Team selection Nunu Agara.
  • The Cardinal were picked to finish sixth in the 2025-26 ACC Preseason Coaches' Poll. Stanford totaled 1,041 points from 70 voters.
  • Agara, Hailee Swain and Lara Somfai were recognized on the Preseason All-ACC Team.
  • Agara returns as Stanford's leading scorer (15.8) and rebounder (6.7) from last season.
  • She scored double figures in 21 games last season and had six 20-point contests.
  • Stanford welcomes in five standout freshmen that comprise the nation's third-ranked recruiting class in McDonald's All-Americans Swain, Somfai and Alexander Eschmeyer along with four-star talents Nora Ezike and Carly Amborn. 
  • The Cardinal has only one transfer student on its roster in junior Mary Ashely Stevenson, coming from Purdue.
  • The Cardinal are currently receiving three votes in the NCAA women's basketball rankings.
  • Head Coach Kate Paye is in her second season with the Cardinal after graduating from the institution in 1995.

Monday's matchup with the Spartans and Cardinal marks the first meeting between the two teams in program history.

SCOUTING SAN FRANCISCO
  • San Francisco enters the new season after concluding 2024-25 with a 15-16 overall record and placed fifth in the West Coast Conference (WCC) standings at 11-9. 
  • The double-digit win total in conference play marks the fourth time in the last five years the program has secured at least 10 WCC victories in a season.
  • The Dons defeated LMU in the third round of the 2025 WCC Tournament, 75-66, but fell to Oregon State, 61-59, in the quarterfinal round to conclude the season.
  • Returners from last season's roster comprise of Sol Castro and Paula Tirado, while San Francisco has talented transfers in Olivia Williams, Mara Neira, Meghan McIntyre, Michell Ugwah and Candy Edokpaigbem.
  • The squad welcomes in five freshmen this season in Noelia Mourino, Aina Cargol, Amy Pateman, Natasa Tausova and Sophie Priestley.
  • San Francisco was picked to finish sixth in the 2025-26 WCC Women's Basketball Preseason Coaches' Poll.
  • Head Coach Molly Goodenbour enters her ninth season at the helm of the San Francisco women's basketball team with a 134-143 record with the Dons.
