Women’s Basketball Opens Home Slate Friday vs. Gardner-Webb; Travels to No. 14 North Carolina Sunday

 GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's basketball team will open its 2025-26 home slate by hosting Gardner-Webb on Friday at 7:00 p.m. in Bodford Arena. The Spartans will then take a short trip down I-40 East to Chapel Hill on Sunday to take on No. 14 North Carolina at Carmichael Arena for a 6:00 p.m. tip-off.

FLEMING GYMNASIUM RENAMED BODFORD ARENA
  • On Saturday, Nov. 8, Fleming Gymnasium, home to UNCG volleyball, women's basketball and men's basketball was renamed to Bodford Arena.
  • This historic moment for the department was made possible through a transformational $2 million gift from the Bodford family.
  • This generous support represents the largest unrestricted gift in the history of UNCG Athletics, as well as the first associated with naming a competitive athletic facility.  
  • The University is already familiar with the Bodford name - the Bodford Family Speed, Strength & Conditioning Center was dedicated in October 2020.  
LAST TIME OUT FOR THE SPARTANS
  • UNCG picked up its first win of the 2025-26 season with a 57-53 victory at Presbyterian last Friday in the Templeton Center.
  • Makiah Asidanya led all scorers with 18 points, while Jeni Levine added 17 points.
  • Rylan Moffitt chipped in 11 points to round out the Spartans in double figures.
  • In her Spartan debut, Mia Simpson led UNCG with seven rebounds.
  • Presbyterian maintained the advantage in the fourth quarter until a three-pointer from Asidanya with 20 seconds remaining gave the Spartans a 55-53 lead.
ABOUT THE SPARTANS
  • UNCG was voted to finish second with two first-place votes in The Southern Conference (SoCon) Preseason Coaches' Poll.
  • Jaila Lee and Asidanya were selected to the SoCon Preseason All-Conference Team after both of their stellar performances last season.
  • The reigning SoCon Coach of the Year, Head Coach Trina Patterson is in her 10th year with the Blue & Gold this season.
  • The 2025-26 roster features five returners and eight newcomers. Four of the newcomers are freshmen, while the other four are transfer students.
  • Asidanya's career-best 22 points at Auburn this season led her to be named SoCon Player of the Week in the first round of weekly awards on Nov. 11.
  • She leads the SoCon with a 16.3 points per game average and is second in the league with a 3.00 three-pointers per game average.
  • Levine paces the conference with 61 field goal attempts.
  • Moffitt is leading the Spartans in the post with 22 rebounds and seven steals.
  • Lee leads the squad with seven dimes this season.
  • UNCG comes into the 2025-26 season after a historic 2024-25 campaign.
  • The Spartans earned a spot in the NCAA Tournament last season for the first time since 1998. The team defeated Chattanooga, 64-57, in The 2025 SoCon Championship, earning an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament.
  • The team fell to No. 1 USC in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament at the Galen Center in Los Angeles, California.
 SCOUTING GARDNER-WEBB
  • The Runnin' Bulldogs come to Greensboro with a 2-4 overall start to the 2025-26 season.
  • Gardner-Webb recently collected a 65-56 win over UNC Wilmington on Wednesday night in Boiling Springs.
  • Amira Ofunniyin led the team with 19 points, while Amina Gray followed closely behind with 16 points.
  • Ofunniyin is pacing the Big South with 42 rebounds and an 8.4 rebounds per game average.
  • Nyla Walker stands out at the charity stripe as she is second in the league with 20 free throws and 28 free throw attempts.
  • Head Coach Terri Williams is in her first season at the helm of the Gardner-Webb women's basketball program.
  • Gardner-Webb was voted to finish seventh in the Big South Preseason Poll.
  • Anaya Harris was selected to the Big South Preseason All-Conference Second Team.
  • The 2025-26 roster welcomes five returners and seven newcomers.
  • Gardner-Webb concluded the 2024-25 season 11-18 overall and 8-8 in the Big South.
SERIES HISTORY VS GARDNER-WEBB
The Runnin' Bulldogs hold the slight advantage over the Spartans in the overall meetings at 4-3. The two teams last met on Nov. 26, 2023, with the Spartans capturing the 64-47 win in Greensboro.

SCOUTING NO. 14 NORTH CAROLINA
  • The No. 14 North Carolina Tar Heels are currently 3-1 overall.
  • The team most recently went 1-1 at the WBCA Challenge in Las Vegas, Nevada, falling to No. 3 UCLA, 78-60, but earning an 82-68 win over Fairfield.
  • The Tar Heels will travel to Greensboro to take on North Carolina A&T on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. before hosting UNCG on Sunday.
  • North Carolina is currently 45th nationally and third in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) in bench points per game with a 31.5 average.
  • Laine Grant is among 17 players that lead the country at 100 percent from the free throw line.
  • Indya Nivar is 18th nationally with a 3.75 steals per game average and 21st with 15 steals this season.
  • Three Tar Heels are averaging double-figures: Nivar (11.8), Ciera Toomey (11.0) and Nyla Harris (10.0).
  • North Carolina was selected to the finish third with one vote for first place in the ACC Predicted Order of Finish.
  • Reniya Kelly was named to the Preseason All-ACC Team, while Nyla Brooks was selected to the Preseason All-Freshman Team.
  • Head Coach Courtney Banghard is in her seventh season with the Tar Heels and has led the team to a 128-65 record during her time.
  • North Carolina concluded the 2024-25 season 29-8 overall and 13-5 in the ACC.
  • North Carolina made it to the Sweet 16 last season, but the season was concluded with a 47-38 loss to the Duke Blue Devils.
SERIES HISTORY VS NO. 14 NORTH CAROLINA
The Tar Heels lead in the overall series with the Spartans at 15-5. Sunday's meeting marks the third consecutive season UNCG has traveled to Chapel Hill. North Carolina picked up last season's contest, 80-56, in Carmichael Arena.
